Doer of the Week Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Artist Johanna Parker was born on Halloween but never thought she would have a career centered on this colorful holiday. Until a few years ago, she held a cushy corporate job designing on-air graphics for a network TV station, and even won an Emmy award for her work. But her heart was elsewhere: "I was trying to make something sad and tragic like the news look pretty," Johanna explains. "Prolonging the limit on my creative freedom was more frightening than pursuing my dream. I missed crafting happy-spirited delights and welcomed my passion for Halloween."
Without a plan in mind, she left her job and began sketching spooky and whimsical designs. She now creates a series of folk-art-style Halloween decorations ranging from vintage-looking treat baskets to papier-mache sculptures to festive party hats, which she sells on her own website and through partnerships with other companies.
